San Jose Costa Rica nightlife

You will find plenty of places in San Jose donwtown. Salsa and Merengue rythms are themain beats that move people, and many of the dance clubs, discos, and salons feature live music on the weekends.

Som dance bands to watch for are Kalua, Chocolate, Los Garbanzos, Mal País, Ghandi and others. They play latin music and local rock and roll. Marfil is a good cover band, and both Harmony Roads and the Blind Pig Blues Band are outfits that play American-style  Jazz Latino, or pianist Manuel Obregon.

A good place to sample a range of San Jose´s nightlife is in El Pueblo, a shopping dining, and entertaiment complex done up like an old Spanish village. It´s just acorss the river to the north of town. The best way to get there is by taxi; all the drivers know El Pueblo well.

Most of the places listed below charge a nominal cover charge; sometimes it includes a drink or two:

Club Gaira, Escazú. An exclusive club located in one of the most recognized residential areas in San Jose; Escazu. Club Gaira features live music every weekend, theme nights, private parties, birthdays and great DJ-playing music. Open doors from Wednesday to Sundays from 7pm till 6am. It offers VIP louges, special drinks and a delicious food menu. If you want to know how a real tico party is then dare yourself to visit Club Gaira.

El Cuartel de la Boca del Monte. This popular bar, one of San Jose´s best, began life as an artist -and-bohemian hangout, and has ebolved into the leading meat market for the you and well-heeled. However, artists stll come, as do foreign exchange students, visitors and a broad cross section of San Jose´s youth.
